Final Reflection

ᐈ Finish line stock pictures, Royalty Free finish line photos ...

As I went through this class everything built on each other making me feel the importance of every assignment and in the real world the thorough process of entrepreneurship. The very first assignment is definitely the most formative as it really allowed me to see how hard it was to come up with twenty things that bugged me. I entered that assignment thinking that list would take me no time at all but was quite surprised by the results. I never realized how much I try to push the things that bug me under the carpet and try to not let them bug me. From the beginning of the semester to now I definitely have gain a more entrepreneurial mindset as those assignments showed me the small little details that  an entrepreneur should look at when developing a start up.  My advice to those taking this course another time is have an open mindset. You never know the impact something or someone can have on you. For me this class was an elective that I heard was easy and fun, but the value I got out of it was so much more as Pryor is so down to earth. This class has so much to offer so maximize your effort and stay on top of the assignments and lectures.

Venture Concept 2

🛴 CITYRIDER - Portable Lightweight Electric Scooter for Commutes ...

Opportunity:
At the University of Florida and the area surrounding the university where students live, there is not a reliable, cheap and safe way to get to in from campus or even around campus at any time. This is an unmet need among the students at the university who mainly live off campus but even those who live on campus.
The demographic of my market is:

  • Ages 17-25
  • Students at the University of Florida
  • People without a car, bike, or scooter
  • People with discretionary income that will spend on transportation methods
  • People who travel to campus often

The transportation methods that make up the current solution for students is walking, the RTS bus system, bikes, Ubers, or friends with cars. These solutions are use to fulfill the unmet need  but still fall short in one aspect or another. For example, the RTS is a great way to get to class when the weather conditions are not ideal. However, the bus system is not reliable the app always changes the arrival time and at night the buses are not as frequent.

There is definitely a big opportunity to solve this unmet need, as a student myself I have heard many complaints about parking and getting to and from campus. If many people are complaining about this unmet need there is an opportunity big enough to capitalize. The window of opportunity will be open for as long as the unmet need is there. Over time, I think this opportunity will grow as more and more apartment complexes are built increasing the size of the market.

Innovation:

My innovation is the UScoot which is purpose is to meet the unmet need of a reliable, cheap and safe method of transportation of University of Florida students. The UScoot is a electric scooter that is used on a rent basis. There is an app in the App Store and Google Playstore that is directly related to the UScoot. This app allows users to unlock the scooter and hook up their credit or debit card to their account allowing them to pay for their rides. The app allows has a locator on it showing you where the closes scooter is to your location. Once the scooter is unlock by a rider, the scooter will take them anywhere they want to go in a two mile radius off campus. When they are done with the scooter they leave it where they get off allowing the next user to pick it up for their turn. The cost of the ride is charged by the minute and the scooter has a flat rate to unlock it for use. To unlock the scooter it costs $1 and then it charges 20 cents per minute of use. So say it take you five minutes to get from your apartment to class it will only cost you $2. For my company, the upfront cost to start my company is so big as we have to buy the scooter upfront and hope that people use them enough to generate us profit. However, once the company takes off there are no continue costs to keep the company going besides maintenance cost on the scooters. Maintenance on the scooter would be on a per basis need and the app would let the maintenance staff when their is a malfunction with it working.

Venture Concept:
The UScoot will solve students at the University's problem of having a consistent and reliable way to get around and to and from campus. The UScoot work on the time of the user, they do not have to stand around and wait to a certain time for them to become available. The UScoot is an easy and fun way to get places you need to be in a timely fashion. Before the introduction of UScoot there were a limited number of ways to get around campus. These ways of other transportation would be my competitors such as RTS, and Uber/ Lyft. Analyzing my competitors allows me to see their strengths and weaknesses and see how I can beat them. First looking at RTS, this is the free bus transportation for students, they have the edge over my company by being free which is huge. College kids tend to capitalize when things are free. However, RTS is not reliable at all hours of the day. At night, there are a limited number of buses and route that they bus go and even during the day the buses do not run on set times. There have been times that the app has said 5 minutes but taking more like 15 minutes putting me in a situation of being late for class. We can beat the competitor of RTS by having low prices that still entice the broke college kids and having our scooter accessible 24/7. The other competitor is Uber and Lyft. their strength is the customer loyalty of college kids that is the first thing that comes to mind when they need a ride somewhere. However, I think a great way to keep business and prevent future competitors is having a contract with the university guaranteeing a limit on competition entering the market.

Minor Elements:

  1. Secret Sauce: My competitors that enter the market after me will probably have similar scooter or bikes that work the same way as mine. My advantage over them would be the customer base I built being the first of my kind being in the market. People love to go with what they know rather than switching something up.
  2. What's next for the venture? I would definitely like to see how the students react to the scooter and see if it is a hit. Then I would try to add a new product of a bike to the mix. Differentiating my product line allows me to profit off two products and if one works better than the other I can adjust my numbers accordingly.
  3. What's next for me? In the next five years, I do not see myself still running the company. I would love to still be involved with the company and help them from time to time but not something I would want to run day to day. I would hopefully have a very successful company and hire people to manage the company. Also, would love to expand this idea to other college campuses around the country.

Feedback and Change:
I received a lot of insightful feedback that helped me alter some parts to my venture concept. Some things that were mentioned was how would maintenance work and how to limit other companies to come into the same market on campus. So I added that maintenance would work on a per need basis and the app would let the maintenance staff know when one is not working. Then I added that I would have a contract with the university to not allow other electric scooters companies to come on campus and steal away my sales.

Your Exit Strategy

For my company, I plan to eventually sell my company off for a large profit. I plan on staying with my company through the growth at the University of Florida and hopefully see the company start up at other universities around the nation. I want my company to eventually be on a national scale but that is something I do not feel I have the knowledge and time to run a company of that magnitude. I would sell my company off and make the profit but would still try to be present with the company. I would help them when they need help and always in my spare time help spread the word about the scooters. I have picked this exit strategy because it best fits what I want to do with my life, I want to enter the consulting field and have family. With wanting those things and having the life I want I would not have time to manage and run a company.

Celebrating Failure

This semester I applied to be a community assistant at my apartment complex, but I did not get the job.  The hiring process for this job was a little longer than I expected as I had a virtual interview, group interview and an one on one in person interview. Through the process, I experienced different emotions and when I found out I did not get the job I was upset. This job would have been something manageable with my school work and allowed me to make money in an easy fashion. In the moment the rejection stunk; however, I was able to gain interview experience from it. This experience allowed me to be more confident in my interviewing abilities which in turn helped me with two interviews I had for summer leadership programs and internships. When it came time for interviews with bigger companies and more important jobs I did much better. I landed two summer leadership programs and an internship offer for next summer. Failure is something that happens to us all but it is how you respond to failure that makes a person better and stronger. Reflecting back on that experience always allows me to see the good that came out of it. I would more likely take a risk in the future then I was before this experience.

What's Next?

Existing Market:
It is always important for a company to be thinking about what is next and what should we be doing in the future to help plan. For UScoot I think the most important things we can do to grow the company is to either offer more products to differentiate the product mix or more the company to other college towns/cities. I think adding bikes to our product mix would allow people to have their choice in the way they want to get around town enticing new customer into the market. Also when it comes to establishing UScoot on other campuses we have to look at the big college cities.

Adding bikes to the product mix-
By adding bikes to the company as another rental transportation for students to use, it allows the company to have more wiggle room when it  comes to making a profit. As the bikes are implemented on campus, we can take a survey or watch users to see what is the more popular choice. This allows the company to fix its numbers on the amount of scooters and bikes to buy and have on campus. Bike already are a popular transportation method for students but not all college kids have bikes because of their costs.

Moving to other college towns:
If this company is successful in Gainesville, it should also be successful in college towns that are similar to Gainesville. This would be a huge step for the company as we plant more UScoot all across the nations making our profit and revenue exponentially grow. The process of picking the next locations to move to is essential because we have to have a big enough market to enter that school. Schools that are commuter base are not a good area to move into such as the University of South Florida.

New Market: Cities across America

Since I was not able to contact anyone in this new market, I am not exactly sure how this idea feels to them. My idea for entering big cities is not to be a main method of transportation but to be seen as an entertainment options for families and friends to enjoy. This new market definitely has more disposable income meaning I can definitely change the prices around a little bit to still have people want to use them but increase my revenue.

People always want to see new cities and travel around them but sometimes walking miles can get old quickly and hurt your feet. This scooter would be appealing as a new way to tour the city and get from point A to point B in a fast manner. I believe if I enter this market the addition of the bike would not be very useful. This being a more leisure activity rather than a transportation method, I believe the consumers would be more attracted to the scooters.

Elevator Pitch 3

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=czl7WVVbum4&feature=youtu.be

This last elevator pitch has definitely improved from the first one I did. I feel more comfortable in front of the camera making it easier to be myself and energetic about my company. The camera angle is finally eye level making a difference in the delivery of the pitch for sure. I took some feedback about people really liking how I show how easy it is to rent and use the scooter so I kept that piece of information in my pitch.

Reading Reflection 2

Book: How To Fail At Almost Everything and Still Win Big, by Scott Adams

1. What was the general theme or argument of the book?
Scott Adams talked about a lot of different topics within his book but the bottom line was how to take care of yourself and how to set priorities to have control of your life.  He talked about the different things to do and focus on so that the rest of your life fits into place. He believes focusing on your energy and health is the first concern. If you do not have yourself figured out you will be burden on the rest of society and your family.

2. How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
This book topics did not correlate directly to what we are learning in class however it is very insightful and definitely enhances the class. This class talks more about the entrepreneurial process but the book focus more on the the individual and the mindset we have. The book talked about goals versus system which I believe can relate to the class by when we create our business' we create goals for our company.

3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
The book talked a lot of focusing on your energy and health. I would form a assignment based on that idea, making people talk about how they focus on their health and energy. What is their source of energy that drives them to get up in the morning? This would help students find their passion and try to focus more on their passions.

4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
I think my biggest takeaway from this book was the idea of goal versus system. He described that goals puts us in a constant state of failure until we reach the goal and the 'high' we feel from the goal is short lived. Then we form another goal that puts us back at that state of failure. However, system allow use to focus on how to change our habits to change something in our lives. For example, if we want to lose weight we should not focus on our mere weight and how we look but rather focus on eating right and working out.

Growing Your Social Capital

Brad Bao: CEO of  Lime Scooters; his background is business specifically business development. He was one of the co-founders of Lime Scooters
Filling the slot on industry expert
I knew of his company before I knew who he was. I researched the company and found on he was the CEO. I connected with him over Linkedin via a message. Him being a CEO of a huge company did not actually respond to my message which I assume would happen but I asked him about his company. I asked what determined where they launched these scooters. Not every city or town has the lime scooters so what made him choose his placement of the scooters. I also asked him how he came up with pricing of the product. He produced his product more as a leisure product for people that have a more discretionary incomes but still how did he price it to still have young professional using his product. If the connection was made with Bao it would have been a huge help to utilize his knowledge about the industry so that I can use his advice for my company.

David Hurst: Study Edge tutor
Filling the market expert spot
I knew David from Study Edge as I use study edge for business finance and he is the study expert. He would be beneficial to me as him and Study Edge all sell products to college students. I emailed David about how they entered and dominated a market full of broke college kids. He believes that most kids see their service as essential or that the student is not the one paying for the membership it is the parent who wants them to excel in school. I asked him also about marketing Study Edge because I feel like they have created such a brand at UF their tactics and strategies are working. He said they appeal to college kids as equals. Most of their employees are young, they throw parties at Swamp which appeals to college kids and they create a lot of swag. They have created shirts and pens to get their name out their to students.

Roger L Brown: CEO of Ninebot
Filling my supplier expert
I had to do research to find someone who could fill this spot. I worked backwards based off my knowledge of Lime scooters to see who their supplier was and it is Ninebot. Ninebot produces and manufactures scooters and sells them to many scooter services. I reached out to Mr. Brown via email but got no response. I wanted to know how much it cost to sell in bulk to give me my scooter to start my business. I wanted to use him as a basis for my search for my supplier of scooter. I wanted to know also the reliability of his product and why it is better than the other suppliers of electric scooters.

This was a lot harder than I expect for building my social capital, it was really hard to contact people who could give me insight on my business. They are also my competitors so I do not think they would want to help me that much as I am competing against their businesses. I did not really gain more social capital as they people never reached out to me to answer my questions. I would say that I did strengthen a weak tie I had with David from Study Edge which was neat and beneficial. This is way different than any other networking I have done, my other networking has been through business mixers and career showcase.

Idea Napkin #2

1. I am second year accounting student from Tampa, Flordia. My plans for school are to do a combined degree with an undergrad in accounting and a masters in information systems. My skills that make me successful with my idea is my ability to do accounting work for my company. I had a summer job last summer and worked alongside a CFO of a small company which allowed me to get an on hand experience of how to run a company and manage money. This will be helpful with my startup as every company needs to know how to finance and do the books for a company to operate. With that being said,  I see myself working the behind scene of the company not doing a lot of sales, promotions or app designing.

2. My company is offering a eco-friendly and affordable option of transportation to the students at the University of Florida. Many students need a reliable and convenient method to get around campus and the surrounding areas because they do not have a bike or car with them at school.

3.My scooters are ideally for student at the University of Florida, who live on or off campus but do not have a method of transportation besides walking. These students are in an age bracket from 17-24 and these people do not have access to a car, bike or scooter already. They have some discretionary money that they would spend to ensure safety when traveling.

4. People would actually pay for my service for a couple reasons. First, many college kids use their money on Ubers and Lyfts so transportation is something college kids would spend money on. Plus the scooter would be a cheaper version of those competitors. Second, college kids would buy it for the convenient factor. They do not have a reliable way of transportation on and around campus. The RTS system is not reliable as the bus always come later than they predict on the app or not at all. This would eliminate people having to rely on a service because the scooter would be waiting for them to use it.

5. My core competency is being the first service like this in Gainesville. I would gain customer loyalty by being the first service line integrated into the market. The use for the scooter is limitless as well people can use it for enjoyment, traveling to and from classes or a job, a way to reach the Publix on the edge of campus for groceries. So even though I have an intended use for the scooter, people will find new ways and reasons to ride the scooter.

Reflection/ Feedback Memo:
I think my answers all fit together and make it work for my company. I think it shows the crack in my startup in the sense of I need to hire people to develop an app that coincides with renting the scooters and have employees out promoting my product. I do believe this company is something that would fit me as I see this as a solution to the problem I have, making me more passionate about this company. I only received one comment on my last idea napkin. Reflecting on that comment it seems that they agree my accounting background would help with the financial aspect of the company but to develop a full staff to help me with the topics I do not have knowledge on.

Elevator Pitch 2:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8o0DzOQiU8&feature=youtu.be

After reviewing the feedback of classmates, I wanted to try to keep the same emotion as the first pitch. People said I seemed excited about this product which in turn made them excited about the product as well. I feel like I try to better my lighting in this video from the past one as it was hard to see my face. They also said to try to make the video eye level, I could not find a place to do it eye level making me rest my phone on the highest chair I have in my house hopefully it is more eye level than the first.

Creating a Customer Avatar

The ideal customer for my company's product is a college student (age 18-24). My customer tends to enjoy the outdoors and thrill of adventure in their life. Ideally the customer does not have a car, because they are using my scooter in place of alternative transportation methods. With my scooter being electric, my customer would agree with the idea of trying to reduce the emission that go in to the air. This is another reason they justify their purchase as a good one because they are not hurting the Earth. My customer would not have kids and there is no affect on usage of the scooter if they are adopted. My customer would watch a bunch of TV and mainly off of streaming platforms such as Hulu and Netflix because cable is too expensive and did not come as a bundle package in their apartment. I would say majority of my customers would support the democratic party as most college kids do. They believe in supporting small businesses which would hopefully translate to them supporting my small startup business.

In relation to my ideal customer, I do have similarities as I am a college kid myself that likes the outdoors. I do fully relate to watching a bunch of TV especially off of Netflix as I am always binge watching shows. I do not fully fit the ideal customer as I do have a car and would use that if the occasion allowed me to. I do not think it is a coincidence that I have similarities with the ideal customer of my business because this is a startup that I believe it and find interesting. I would not say scooters are a passion of mine but they do peak my interest and I would use them if they were available.

What's Your Secret Sauce?

Part 1:
- I was captain of my high school soccer team since Sophomore year, which helped me develop leadership skills and abilities
-I worked a summer job last summer along side a CFO of a small manufacturing company that allowed me to learn how companies operate day to day.
-My parents taught me from a young age that I have to work to get something and it is not just handed to me, this helped develop a strong work ethic.
-I have a lot of self-determination making myself set the bar high as I know my capabilities and I can push myself to grow.
-I have a risk management role in the coed business fraternity, this has helped me learn how to deal with conflict in an appropriate but timely manner.

Part 2:
1 - My sister commented about how I am really self-motivated and hard on myself with academic always striving for the A.
2- My roommate said that I am always willing to help her and others when it comes to life problems and school, that I care a lot about my friends and make them a high priority.
3- My other roommate said I take responsibility in the apartment by cleaning the living space and kitchen whenever it gets dirty even though I might not have contributed to the mess.
4- My mom said that I am very well rounded in the sense that I am smart academic wise, putting a lot of effort into school, but also socially I do well working with others.
5- My dad mentioned how smart I am with money and that I pay very close attention to how and where I spend my money which is great when it comes to a business.

Part 3:
When I was evaluating myself I looked for a lot of  moments that capture my human capital but my friends and family talked about just my abilities and traits. My dad thought of something that was really different than anything I thought of. I do believe he is correct as I like to see where my money is going making sure I am not just spending excessive money with no reasoning. It was cool to see what everyone said and even if their thoughts were slightly different than what I came up with, I still believe their comments to be correct about me.

Figuring Out Buyer Behavior Part 2

Interview 1:
The first person I interview chooses from the alternatives solutions by what is the most efficient and convenient for them. They also said price is a factor when choosing but they believe that in the case of comprising their safety when getting to and from campus they would be willing to pay for a service that would increase their safety when traveling. Their post-purchase evaluation seem to be did it save me time getting to where I needed to be and was it a safe option. If they thought both of the questions to be answered with yes then they were content and thought their decision was qualified as "good".

Interview 2:
The alternative solutions the person has besides the scooter would be to walk, ride the bus or have their roommate drop/pick them up. When choosing between the alternative they said during the day they just walk because they enjoy it. At night, they said they rather have their roommate help them with a ride because they do not feel that safe walking home by themselves in the dark. They said that money is a factor for them so that is why they try to avoid calling in Uber as a way of transportation. Their post purchase evaluation seemed quite simple but they consider their choice good if they made it to the place they needed to be on time and they got their safely at a minimal or no price.

Interview 3:
The last person I interviewed was different than the rest as he lived on campus and fit my market by using a scooter for around campus travel. He said he currently only walks around campus, as he has no bike and does not want to figure or worry about the bus system. So he does not really have to choose from any alternative currently as his only method of getting to and from places on campus s walking. He said he would love a fast way to get to places but does not want to buy a bike because the upfront cost is so high and he sees peoples' bikes get parts stolen from them. He seemed not to be price sensitive and would definitely give the scooter a try.

After interviewing potential buyer in my market it seems like the scooter is a good idea to implement on and around campus as an  alternative method of transportation. My only concern would be the pricing, I already have it priced cheaper than Uber and Lyft but it still might be too high for some highly price sensitive consumers. All the alternative methods that they are using now are free so this scooter has to have a high enough value for people to think it is worth their money.

Reading Reflection No.1

Steve Jobs, Walter Issacson

1.
  • What surprised you the most? I found it surprising that Jobs started college and started studying liberal arts. This is shocking to me because his passion and ultimately his company is not built on a foundation of liberal arts but rather technology/coding/business.
  • What about the entrepreneur did you admire the most? Steve Jobs was a very straight forward and blunt guy. He told you his honest opinion about your idea even when it is bad. This is an aspect I desire about Jobs because that is something I would want from my boss and my peers.
  • What about the entrepreneur do you admire the least? I find it least admirable that he dropped out of college after one year. I understand college is not for everyone but such a driven person like Jobs such have had some structural college experience to gain knowledge. He ended up being very successful without college but I feel like college could have helped him understand how to run a business.
  • Did the entrepreneur experience adversity and failure? If so, what did they do about it? Jobs faced a lot of adversity and hardship throughout his life with the company in personal life. With Apple, Jobs had many battles against other big software companies like Microsoft and Google. He ended up working out the situation with Microsoft allowing them to make Office suitable for Apple products.
2. What competencies did you notice the entrepreneur exhibit?
I believe some competencies that Steve Jobs had were grit, determinations and the willingness to succeed. He did not let go of situation that frustrated him but rather pushed through to see the end. His passion for technology drove his ambitious personally to be successful.

3. Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
The book really never showed his struggle with Apple. The book talked about how he got to the place of starting Apple but never mentioned how it took off. Suddenly it shifted the story to his success and how his products took off and he started selling millions of products.

4. If you were able to ask two questions to the entrepreneur, what would they be and why?
The questions I would ask would be:
Did you think you were creating the next big thing in the technology world or were you more surprised by the take off it had?
If you could go back and change a time in your life, what would it be and why?

5. What do you think the entrepreneur's opinion was of hard work? Do you share that opinion?
I believe Steve Jobs opinion on hard work is you have to work hard even when you think the universe is pushing against you. To be successful you have to put in hard work even on the days you feel like giving up. I believe in a similar opinion of his definition of hard work.

Halfway Reflection

Image result for do not give up

1. Some strategies I have developed to keep up with this course is to come to lecture or watch them live on my laptop. If I watch the lecture when they happen it is easier to keep up with them and I do not find myself cramming two lectures on Sunday to do the cupcake. This allows time for me to get the assignments done for the week and also easily manage other classes as I take this course. Another strategy is to try to take the cupcake when it comes out. This makes it easier to take the cupcake because the lectures happened only a few days ago. If I wait to Sunday or Monday to take it, it is much harder because I am only able to remember what my notes have not the information still in my head from being at lecture.

2. I have not felt like giving up in this class so far but by far I dreaded and felt the most out of the class when we had to do the first elevator pitch. It was something I was not looking forward to recording and submitting. I feel like I had a good tenacious grip on this class so far as I feel like you have to remain on top of this class in order to not fall behind. There are weekly assignments and cupcakes that you have to stay with if not those are easy points you give up and can not get back.

3. Three tips I would give to future students:
       a. Either go to live lecture or watch the lecture live, easiest way to stay on top of this class.
       b. Take the cupcake when it first comes out, will be the time when you recall the most from the               lectures.
       c. If you want to be an entrepreneur, listen  and actually do the assignments because they can                  help you develop your idea into a business.

Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No.1

The segment of my market that I pick is students who live off campus who do not have any means of transportation in Gainesville, meaning they do not own a car, scooter or bike (skateboard etc.).

Interview 1: (female living at 2nd Ave)
For her, the need awareness comes when she tries to get to and from campus later at night whether she is going to study at the library or for a club meeting. She says during the day she does not mind walking to and from her classes and even if the timing is right she will take the bus to school. But at those later hours the buses run less frequently and she does not feel safe walking home alone at night. For her, her immediate solution is having her roommate who has a car pick her up or catching a ride home with a friend. She says sometimes she will walk home and call a friend but she is nervous doing so, occasionally she will call an Uber depending on the price and time of night.

Interview 2: (male living at Gainesville Place)

For him, the need awareness comes for when he goes to classes. For most of his classes he rather bikes than take the bus. He just takes the bus because he has no other alternatives. He says the bus is reliable in coming every 15 minutes from his place but to get to his stop it takes about 25 mins which he believes is too long. It makes him leave for class way earlier than he like to. For his immediate solution he rides the bus. He says he does not come to campus during odd hours in he evening and if he has to his roommate drives him. The bus is consistent but just puts a strain on his day because he feels like his commute to and from school makes him unproductive for over an hour each day.

Interview 3: (female living behind mid)
For her, the need awareness comes when she goes to campus for work. She works at Starbucks in the library. She sometimes gets weird hours making her leave at night time. She says it would be nice to have a reliable and safe way to get home at night. She says none of the bus loops run close to her place leaving her to walk. Neither of her roommates has a car so she just calls her boyfriend every night when she has to walk home alone. She says during the day she does not mind walking to and from classes and work because she feels safe. Her immediate solution is walking and talking to someone on the phone but she believes that if that had rental bikes she would use them because of their convenience and less scary to ride a bike at night than walk.

After interviewing three different people, I feel like there are multiple uses for these bikes just to get to and from campus. They all would use them at different hours and for different circumstances. It seems the UBikes would be a huge convenience for students because it would allow them to use them whenever the time is right for them to head somewhere. I would describe this segment as people who are looking for a new transportation method for travel, there current method is working but they are tired of their current state. They do not stretch very far when it comes to information search as they go with the only solution they currently have. For one it is relying on the bus for the other is they rely on their boyfriend to call them.

Idea Napkin No. 1

1.  My name is Danielle Arigo and I am a sophomore from Tampa, Florida. I am at the University of Florida pursuing a degree in accounting. I really excel when it comes to projections and analysis of numbers. I think this would be beneficial to my company of UBikes when it comes to the financial side of the company. It could help my company better project how many bikes to start out with and estimate the growth of the company throughout Gainesville.
2. My business offers an affordable solution to traveling around Gainesville whether it be for enjoyment or as a reliable transportation method. May students do not have cars or bikes in Gainesville so instead of trying to Uber or walk to and from places they can rent a bike at their convenience.
3. I am offering it to University of Florida students primarily who do not already possess a car, scooter or bike. These students primarily live off campus and are needing a way to travel to campus. The general age of my market is people who are around the ages of 17 to 24. These people have some extra discretionary money they do not mind spending to get around campus or Gainesville. Most of my potential consumers find the RTS system inconvenient either because of the timing or pick up locations.
4. My business is valuable because there is nothing like it in Gainesville so far. I already have a competitive advantage on the market if people enter the market after I start because mine would be the first product they know and use. My business is also valuable because of the convenience factor, people can use the bikes whenever they want and do not have to wait for a specific time to come around in order for them to ride. Lastly my business is valuable because it is cheaper than other competitors that offer rides. The bike is a more reasonable price for college students on a tight budget compared to Uber or Lyft.
5. My core competency is being like no other business in and around the Gainesville area. MY company of UBikes serves the needs of students by providing a way to get to and from campus. In addition the UBike can be used for pure entertainment. If it is a nice day out friends can get together and ride bikes and explore downtown Gainesville. I believe no other company serves needs of transportation and as a leisure activity.

After analyzing my business in depth I believe it can be successful with proper estimates. I believe to launch this business there has to be a really good estimate of the number of people who would use the UBikes. From a conservative standpoint I can always add more bikes around the area if it is successful. The upfront cost is so high with a business like this so it is important to see how well the business does before growing. I definitely think there is a market that would adopt these bikes into their everyday lives.

Elevator Pitch 1

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXbMFQU_3SI&feature=youtu.be

Testing the Hypothesis Part 2

Changing up my solution to the problem. My solution for the lack of parking in and around UF campus will be solved by having bikes all around campus that people can use for however long they want. These bikes will be called UBike. Say they want to ride from Heavener to the Reitz and then they park it at the Reitz and another person can use it to go from the Reitz to their class at the music building. These bikes would be spread around campus in a 2 mile radius allowing people to use them to get to and from school if need be. The bikes would charge you by the minute and that is where my profit would comes from after the first initial upfront cost of getting all the bikes.

Who? UF students and visitors all fall inside the boundary. However, students who already have a bike or scooter fall outside the boundary because they already have a method of transportation that works for them around and to and from campus.
What? This need this solution is trying to fulfill is a way to get to and from campus that is more reliable and safe than walking or trying to catch the bus. This solution also tries to fulfill the need of people trying to get from one side of the campus to the other in a short period of time.
Why? The need of people inside the boundary is different than those who are outside because the need of the people outside have already been fulfill by a bike of their own or a scooter. However, someone with a scooter might still use the bikes on campus because the scooter parking is on the outside of campus and where they need to go in all on the inside of campus.

Interview Findings:
After changing my idea of solving the problem, I found this idea makes a lot more sense. This caters to more people's needs as it fulfills people who do not have a car at school can still get around campus. People thought the bike idea was a neat way of solving the problem as people who lived in big cities before said their downtown area had rental bikes that everyone loved to use. This is positive news because if they are successful in other areas it makes me hopeful they can work here. UBike seems like an ideal idea in potential consumers eyes as they view this options as affordable and efficient.

Inside the Boundary

Who is in it: UF students, faculty, and visitors (2 miles radius)
What the need is: safe and efficient to and from / around campus
Why that need exists: limited parking and other transportation method

Outside the Boundary:
Who is not: people living beyond the 2 mile radius or have a scooter or bike
What the need is not: a bus system or inconvenient
Alternative Explanations: other methods of travel

Solving the Problem

My problem is there is limited parking on and around campus making student have to find alternative methods to get to classes on campus.

My solution is creating a parking app that allows people to see where around and on campus where spaces are available. This would help people who drive on campus to find a parking spot without driving all over to find the available spaces. The app would stretch to show parking available on campus but also around campus near midtown and downtown. The app would be for scooter and cars making it useful for majority of UF students. For scooters the app would say what percent full the scooter parking area is to allow that to go to a spot where they do not chance getting a ticket because they are not in a space.

Testing the Hypothesis Part 1

My Opportunity

Who: UF/Gainesville Parking
What: There is limited parking on and around campus making people waste time trying to find parking
Why: There is such little parking and the available spots are scattered around campus making people drive all around to find an open spot,

Interview 1 (a girl living off campus in an apartment)

She does not drive for class because there is no where to park that is convenient for her classes so she rides the bus. At night she has club meetings to go to and for those she drives because parking is lifted. She think Gainesville city parking convenient and if she did not have a pass with her apartment complex she would get a city parking pass because it would allowed her to park in various spots around town and closer to campus. She believes that there has to be a quicker way to solve this problem besides putting up a parking garage that will take a whole year.

Interview 2 (a guy who lives on campus at a fraternity house)

He is only a sophomore so he has only lived on campus at his time here at the University of Florida. He think the parking is not hug problem partly because he has a scooter and it does not affect his time getting places as he does not have a car at school. When he drives with his friends and comes back to park on campus he says they have to park in the garage behind Hume sometimes because parking on fraternity row sometimes runs out. He has no real opinion on Gainesville city parking just because he does not have a car.

Interview 3 (a grad student living far off campus)

She lives off campus and farther away because she wanted cheaper rent. For her graduate program she does not have many classes on campus and the ones that she does only are two days a week. She says she has trouble getting there and just takes the bus because it is free and the most convenient options with parking out the window. She says the bus ride takes her about 30 minutes so she definitely believes there must be a solution to this parking problem. She is did not go to UF for her undergraduate program so this situation is all new to her.

Interview 4 (a guy living behind midtown)

He lived on campus for the first year and these past two years have lived behind midtown. He said he realized how bad of the parking is on campus so that is why he specifically moved to a location convenient for him to get to his classes. He has the city parking decal and he raved about how useful it is. He said he can go to other places behind midtown to visit his friends and he can park his car close to them. He said he never taken a bus even when he was on campus so he was not sure how efficient they are as a way of transportation for commuting students.

Interview 5 (a girl that lives south of campus)

She lives far from campus because of the rent prices and her financial ability only allows her to be far from campus because of the rent prices increases. She has a car and can only drive it in the evening time which she complained about because she wants to take her car to campus to make it more accessible to get to campus. She says the bus has a stop by her apartment complex  just the bus schedule is hit or miss with the time she has to leave. I asked her about Gainesville city parking and she said she has thought about the option but did not want to pay for a decal she would use like 3 days out of the week.

I see a opportunity in the parking situation at the University and I am realizing the solution has to be immediate rather than a whole year for another garage that is place in a location not really useful for student commuting to campus.

Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends

Regulatory Opportunity #1
Legalizing of Marijuana for Recreational Use Across America:

The legalization of marijuana has been all over the news for the past few months as many states has approved it for recreational use. This is a huge opportunity for anyone that is in the medical marijuana field as some of their business can increase as their customer base expands. I believe that the customer with this opportunity is anyone currently smokes marijuana. This customer base is a lot of college students and middle aged people. I think this is a rather easy opportunity to exploit if you are looking to enter into the business of selling recreational marijuana.
I saw this information and saw this as an opportunity because I am surrounded by people would be a customer if marijuana was legalized. Since I see how big of a market this opportunity can have, I believe you can see it as a opportunity rather than another changing trend in society.

Regulatory Opportunity #2
Data Privacy Law

I found this on pwc website a new law has been passed in California called the California Consumer Protection Act (CCPA). This act allows consumer to get a copy of all their personal information collected about them, allowing a new breakthrough when it comes to personal privacy. This a potential opportunity for technology companies to help develop a copy of peoples information that has been collected. I think the technology industries are the many customer than can capitalize on this opportunities as they are able to obtain reports about protection privacy in a quick fashion. I feel like this is a fairly difficult opportunity to exploit because with this law I feel like it would be government employees help regulating this law. I see this as an opportunity because we are reaching the age of technology where everyone is worried about their privacy as technology invades every aspect of their life,

Economic Opportunity #1
Tax Cut and Jobs Act

This happened a couple years back but it takes awhile to see the effects of a bill that is passed. This act was passed back in 2017 which was on of the first things Trumps did when he got in office. I found this story from thebalance.com which broke down what the act was and what it meant for different groups of people based off of financial status. This might be a potential opportunity for any potential entrepreneur as with the tax cut people have more disposable income to spend on their wants. I feel like the customer of this opportunity is any one with more disposable income due to the tax cut.

Economic Opportunity #2
Stock Market Predictions

The stock market has a lot of change throughout the year but is always a hot topic of discussion during the beginning of the year about what experts predict will happen. I read about the predictions on Forbes to grasp a deeper understanding of the opportunities for investment this year. Experts say that the market has a two-thirds of a chance of a 10% increase. This is a potential opportunity for investors or novice investors to get their feet wet in investing. I feel like this opportunity is easy to exploit if you read up on where you are trying to invest and the predictions experts have made.

Identifying Local Opportuity

Opportunity #1
Name of article: Task force warns against illegal prescriptions
Description of story and problem: With the increase in the amount of illegal drugs out on the streets the has been a rise in the amount of drug overdoses. Prevention leader are seeking help from medical professionals like pharmacists to help educate the people about the different types of drugs and  how they affect people. With the growing amount of drugs on the black market, pharmacies see a decrease in the amount of people looking for drugs as the are getting them from other unreliable sources. The drugs from the black market can be laced with a number of things making the effects horrible when the drug is used.
Who has the problem: medical professionals (pharmacists), prevention leaders, cops, hospitals, doctors, insurance, black market

Opportunity #2
Name of article: Increasing Traffic
Description of the story and problem: The Gainesville Regional Airport traffic has been increasing over the past year as they just added my routes to fly directly to like Fort Worth Texas. The growth will come with an increase in security line waiting time as well as traffic to and from the airport. Everyone loves to fly when the airports are small because they like how convenient it is to get through security and onto the plane. Gainesville is wanting to expand and increase the number of people going through the airport.
Who has the problem: airport employees ( security, baggage, ticket people) , commuters in the Gainesville city, travelers, visitors

Opportunity #3
Name of article: Rays to City: Trop land isn't for use
Description of the story and problem: The Tampa Bay Rays home field, Tropical Field, is going to get renovated as the team looks to stay there until 2027. There was an idea of splitting home field time between St. Pete and Montreal to increase their revenues. The Rays do not see much love from their fans at their home field as they never sell out of a game. The current location is not ideal but with limited space in Tampa to move to the stadium is going to have to do for now. The city does not want to lose their home team so they are looking for any reason to make them stay.
Who has the problem: Rays players and fans, St. Pete City council, Rays owners and staff, St. Pete residents

Opportunity #4
Name of article: State tries to ease impact of toll lanes
Description of the story and problem: Atlanta is a big city with tons of traffic from commuters to travelers. They want to make the traffic lighter and easier travel for many but that comes at the expense of the residents along the interstates already. With the toll lanes expansion covering 22 miles route, current residents are worried about the the noise and impact on their travel with the construction.
Who has the problem: Atlanta commuters, current residents close to the interestates, Atlanta transportation employees, travelers through Atlanta

Opportunity #5
Name of article: Hawaii tourism arrivals top 10M
Description of the story and problem: The tourism in Hawaii has just top 10 million which to some residents might be too much tourism. The tourism stimulates a great economy for the residents as it opens up so many jobs for them. However, they do not think the money they get from those jobs is enough to compensate for the amount of tourism they see.
Who has the problem: hotels in Hawaii, residents and tourist of Hawaii, companies in Hawaii, tourist locations in Hawaii

Forming An Opportunity Belief

1.
Beginning Point: The problem that I think exists is University of Florida's small amount of parking hinders students who need/want to drive to campus.

2.
What is the unmet need?
Limited amount of parking on UF campus especially by the business school.
Who has the need?
UF students, faculty, tourist/visitors
Where did the need come from?
The need has been around ever since I have been attending UF so 2 years but could be longer than that amount of time.
What are people doing about this need?
People have to use alternative methods to get to campus. Some people have to take the bus, walk or park their car close to campus and walk the rest.
Opportunity Exist: 75%

3.
Prototypical customer: I would say any student that attends the university with a car living farther than 0.7 miles from campus.

4.
Interactions with Prototypical Customers
#1 - The first person I interviewed said she does not feel that the problem of no parking exists during the day for her because she either rides the bus or walks. However, she sees the problem at night when she has extracurricular activities on campus in the evening. She said they start before parking is lifted so she has to ride the bus but when they are over it is dark out and she does not want to be waiting for a bus in the dark by herself. This is the time in which she finds the real practical use of having parking close to the business school. She seemed satisfied with how she is dealing with it because most of the time her friends pick her up, but believes their is a better solution than having to nag her friends for a ride.
#2 - The second person I interviewed believes that parking is a huge problem for him as it puts him at an inconvenience. He believes that parking close to the business school or anywhere around the school perimeter would help him out a lot. He says right now he has to plan to leave so early for class because the timing of the bus would either put him to class 30 minutes earlier or 10 minutes late. He says the bus is sufficient but a parking garage of some sort would be worth the money. He said he lived on campus last year and did not have a car so he never really understood the parking situation until now. He says he lives off campus with a car and no scooter so the problem escalated as most of his classes are in person rather than online.
#3 - The last person I interviewed sees the problem of no parking because of lot of his friends complain about it to him but for him he does not mind it because he has a scooter. He said even with the amount of scooter parking it is still hard to find a spot sometimes so he can only imagine the pain a person has trying to park on campus with a car.

5.
Reflection
After speaking with potential customers, I was not really surprised by their responses. I feel like it makes sense that someone with a scooter does not find the parking situation horrible because there is parking for scooters spread out all around and through campus. They never even see the problem as it is does not relate to them. In the same way, I am not surprised that the people that just have a car at school find the parking situation horrible and inconvenient. I learned that there really is an opportunity with this situation whether it is building a parking garage or some other alternative method to solve this problem.

6.
Summary
My belief did not change from the time I started and after the interactions with the potential customers. I realize that there is still the unmet need of parking but maybe not all students have it especially if they have a scooter. I believe most of my original idea is there and there is something to deal with when it comes to the parking situation at the university. I think customer feedback is huge when an entrepreneur is looking at their idea and how successful it can be. I definitely think the entrepreneur should adapt their idea to tailor the needs of the customer.  If the customer is telling that their honest opinions about a situation that is valuable help that needs to be noted. The entrepreneur should not make their idea about what they want but rather the customer wants because they are the people with the money and unmet need.

Entrepreneurship Story

Image result for shark tank

In my life growing up, I did not have interactions with entrepreneurs; no one in my family invented anything nor did any of my family friends. However, my family thoroughly enjoyed watching Shark Tank at night. With Shark Tank on 11 seasons now there are plenty of different episodes to watch. My dad and I were the main people in my family that enjoyed watching it and we always think to ourselves 'that is such a simple idea why couldn't we think of that.' This is little exposure a to entrepreneurship, has definitely allowed me to learn that not everyone is successful on their first, second or even tenth try but it is those people who keep trying that will be successful.

Why ENT3003?
Upon signing up for class to take this semester, I knew I had to take business finance so I needed to be pair it with low demanding classes. I heard great things about this class and about Professor Pryor leaving it an easy choice to pick and take this semester. At the beginning of the semester I watched the lectures online for a week because I know it was going to be a race to get a seat. Now I go in person because I think this is the most interactive and funniest class I have taken so far at the University of Florida. I hoping to learn more about the process of entrepreneurship and hear more about real stories of entrepreneurs and their story to success.

Bug List

  1.  The intersection of University Ave and 13th street going north and south on 13th street and there is no right-hand turn lane.

WHY: This bug exists because there is so much traffic through that intersection making the right-hand lane slow as it is a mix of cars are turning and going straight.
      2. Drivers that are in the left lane (passing lane) that go the speed limit.

WHY: This bug exists because people do not pay attention and are distracted as they drive
3. Fast food restaurants not asking how many sauces you want and only give you one or two when I asked for extra sauce.
WHY: This bug exists because that is the normal amount they give out and forget or get lazy when putting an order together
4. When one of my roommates leaves the apartment, door unlock when no one is at the apartment.
WHY: This bug exists because I do not one random people coming into our apartment and taking stuff
5. When one of my roommates leaves or comes homes when I am sleeping and slams the door.
WHY: This bug exists because I am light sleeper causing me to wake up in the middle of the night or the morning and have a hard time going back to sleep.
6. When the trash builds up in the trash can and no one takes it out.
WHY: This bug exists because I like things to be clean and neat.
7. Paper straws instead of plastic straws
WHY: This bug exists because when I use a paper straw it becomes limp.
8.When people do not fill up the Brita after they emptied it
WHY: This bug exists because when I go to get more water, I have to get water from the sink because no water is in the Brita
9. When people leave dirty dishes in the sink for a long time and do not wash them.
WHY: This bug exists because when I go use a pot or pan, I have to take it out of the dirty dish pile and wash it.
10. Very limited parking at UF in general and none of the commuter lots are near the business school
WHY: This bug exists because I have to walk home and depending on the time leave campus, I would feel much safer driving home.
11. People who drag their feet when they walk.
WHY: This bug exists because we learn to pick up our feet when we are taught to walk.
12. When people do not have manners when talking to a person that has authority over them.
WHY: This bug exists because I believe people should be respectful to others and using manner really shows respect towards others.
13. When people interrupt you when you are speaking.
WHY: This bug exists because I find it impolite to speak over or cut someone off when they are talking.
14. When I make simple mistakes in doing a problem for homework or on a test.
WHY: This bug exists because I understand the topic just went too quickly on solving it.

15. When the rider app says a bus is coming in like 5 mins and then readjust several times and the bus does not come for another 15 minutes
WHY: This bug exists because I get ready super-fast to catch the bus and then stuck waiting there for a decent amount of time.
16. When people make the grammatical error of using the wrong form of a word, like its vs it’s and their vs there vs they’re.
WHY: This bug exists because they grammatical errors are so elementary but people still use those words interchangeably.
17. Chewing with their mouth open.
WHY: This bug exists because it is gross to see what is in other people’s mouth and the sound is agitating.
18. Drivers who cut in front of you but do not accelerate.
WHY: This bug exists because you do not change lanes and cut someone off unless you are going to accelerate to the speed of which the flow of traffic is in that lane.
19.When people are driving on the on ramp to a interstate and are going slow and not accelerating to merge.
WHY: This bug exists because it is very difficult to merge onto an interstate if you are going 20mph the speed of the rest of traffic.

      20. Pens that bleed through the page
WHY: This bug exists because if I use that type of pen I can only write on one side of the                     paper.

Reflection:
This assignment for me was relatively hard. When I first started the assignment the first five or so cam pretty quickly; however, as time progressed  I struggled to think of things that bug me. I found this difficult partly because I try to let go of the things that bug me and not hold any type of grudge. I found that if I took this assignment and spend multiple days on it, then I could come up with things that bugged me over those couple of days. For me to come up with 20 bugs over the course of a couple days, I wondered how long the list would be if I kept track over the entire semester.
